Not only have the racetracks been in excellent condition during the 25-lap features, the new formats to determine the A-Main starting lineups have help to inhibit passing.
The Top-8 Redraw utilized by ASCS this year has been a major factor for the increased movement. Up until this past Friday, no race had been won from the pole, and only one other event was won from the front row.
Easily the largest reason for the increased excitement has been the introduction of the “Four Laps of Fame Scramble Dash”. This dash, utilizing those 9th-14th in passing points, has given the drivers starting midpack the extra laps they need to challenge the top eight starters.
Three times already this year, a driver from the 9-14 dash has gone on to win the feature event. A total of 10 drivers have been able to transfer the knowledge learned in the dash to score a top-five in the feature, including at Canandaigua in June when the top three A-Main finishers all came from the dash.
Bobby Breen, who has come from the dash or farther back three times to finish in the top-five, currently has the lead in the season-long standings. Despite not making every race this season, the youngster from Savannah, NY has constantly been moving his way forward.
Chuck Hebing, the defending Bear Paw/ Gater Hard Charger of the Season, is just won hard charger point behind Breen. “Cobra” won on the first night of the year by utilizing the Four Laps of Fame at Woodhull.
Jared Zimbardi, who won the inaugural Bear Paw/ Gater Hard Charger of the Season in 2005, sits third in points while standing second in the overall points rundown.
Current ASCS Patriot points leader Bryan Howland is fourth in the standings with current Insinger Race Fuels Rookie of the Year Leader Bubba Broderick completing the top-five.
At the end of the year, a point fund will be distributed to the top-three in total hard charger points. Hard charger points are given out to competitors that move up from their starting spot from the beginning of the feature to the completion.
